Hand shapes explained
Before the creases, look at the hand itself. Traditional palmistry sorts the outline into four shapes, and the shape is a style of attention: what you notice first, and what you are willing to wait for. It is the setting for the lines.

How to check your own hand in 30 seconds
Use the hand you write with. Hold it palm up in daylight, fingers relaxed and together, thumb to the side. Two comparisons are enough. Then stop.
First, the palm. Look from the wrist crease up to where the fingers begin, and across from the thumb side to the little-finger side. When those spans are close, the palm is called square. When the palm is clearly longer than it is wide, it is called rectangular. A small difference is still a square. Call it rectangular only when the length is obvious.
Second, the fingers, set against that palm. Compare the middle finger with the length of the palm beneath it. Fingers that look short against the palm are short. Fingers that reach about the length of the palm, or past it, are long. If you cannot tell, leave the length undecided rather than forcing a label onto a hand that has not chosen.
The pair is the shape. A square palm with short fingers is Earth. A square palm with long fingers is Air. A rectangular palm with short fingers is Fire. A rectangular palm with long fingers is Water. If the hand sits between two shapes, say so. "Mostly earth, with longer fingers" is a clearer note than a costume that does not fit. The signs in each element are on zodiac elements.
The Earth hand
An Earth hand has a square palm and short fingers. The palm looks broad, and the fingers do not stretch far past it.
You trust what can be touched and finished. A good chair, a meal that took time, a result you can point to. A plan that stays in talk does not count as the work. People call this stubborn. Often it is just the difference between a promise and a mood.
The earth signs in that old family are Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn. The link is a shared temperament. It is not a test of the birthday on a certificate. Each sign has its own daily page.
The Air hand
An Air hand has a square palm and long fingers. The palm is still about as wide as it is long, and the fingers extend well beyond it.
You sort the day in language. A question gets a name, a comparison, a second look, before it gets an action. You can be devoted and still need the subject to be allowed to change. The work that drains you is the same paragraph copied until it dies.
The air signs are Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. Traditional palmistry pairs the Air hand with that element. The pairing describes a style of attention. It does not assign a birthday.
The Fire hand
A Fire hand has a rectangular palm and short fingers. The palm is longer than it is wide, and the fingers stay comparatively short.
A start is easier than a wait. You hear the beginning of a thing before the room has agreed it is a thing. Feeling shows in the manner, and a delay is felt as friction. Give you a clear finish line and you will run it. Give you a meeting about the finish line and you will invent a different race.

The Water hand
A Water hand has a rectangular palm and long fingers. Both the palm and the fingers run long, so the whole hand looks extended.
You keep the weather of a room. Who has not eaten, who is pretending, which old story is still sitting at the table. An impression is kept and turned over before it is named. That is a gift, and it is also a weight. Not every stray feeling in the building is yours to carry home.
The water signs are Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. Traditional palmistry places the Water hand with that element, as a portrait of temperament.
Shape, then the lines
Name the shape, or the two shapes the hand sits between, and then read the creases. The five lines are a separate map.
