The four zodiac elements
Twelve signs share four elements, three signs in each. Fire, Earth, Air, and Water are a temperament you can recognize across a table. They are not a set of matching people. The dates are the Sun's usual stay. A name opens today's horoscope. Ruling planets for the whole list are on zodiac signs. The same four names also describe the outline of a hand, which is a different map, on hand shapes.
Inside an element, the difference is how the sign moves. A cardinal sign opens the season. A fixed sign holds the middle of it. A mutable sign turns the corner into whatever comes next. Two people can love the same element and still disagree about whether to start, stay, or change.
Fire
Aries · Mar 21 – Apr 19 · Cardinal · Leo · Jul 23 – Aug 22 · Fixed · Sagittarius · Nov 22 – Dec 21 · Mutable
Fire would rather move than hold a meeting about moving. The shared temperament is heat with a direction: already interested, already willing, a little impatient with the speech that comes before the doing. Courage shows up early. So does a kind of honesty that does not enjoy a long preamble.
Aries is cardinal, so the season opens because you opened it. A plan that is still collecting permission feels like a coat held out and never worn. You are easiest to love when a yes is allowed to be simple. Leo is fixed. The flame stays where it was welcomed. You give a room the best of the evening when the room is willing to be glad with you, and a specific thanks lands as affection. A room that looks past you does not make you smaller. It receives less of your light. Sagittarius is mutable, and the flame travels. You tell the truth by making it larger, and you love people by wanting them along. A life that cannot change its mind starts to feel like a story you have already finished.
Air is the company that makes fire brighter. Air brings another road and a sharper question. Fire keeps air from living entirely inside the question. Earth can give the heat a time and a finished thing. The bargain is a little haste on one side and a little smoke on the other. Water asks both people to translate. Fire wants to do something about a feeling. Water often wanted the feeling kept. They meet well when the feeling is said in words and the action waits until it has been heard.
Two fire signs recognize the hurry in each other. They also reach for the same match. Say whose start it is, and the evening survives.
Earth
Capricorn · Dec 22 – Jan 19 · Cardinal · Taurus · Apr 20 – May 20 · Fixed · Virgo · Aug 23 – Sep 22 · Mutable
Earth trusts what can be returned to. A promise, a craft, a person who is still there after the mood has left the room. The shared temperament is faith in the ordinary evidence. A beautiful plan that cannot be lived in does not yet count as the work.
Capricorn is cardinal earth, so you begin by giving a hope a structure: a date, a standard, a next piece that meets the one already set. The work is one of the ways you take care of people. Leave a seat in that structure for the person doing the building, including you. Taurus is fixed. You believe a life in the things that survive applause: the key in its place, the joke you both still make, the table that has heard this story before. When you are slow, you are usually asking whether the new plan can still be sat in next month. Virgo is mutable earth. You adjust the real world until it is kinder to inhabit: the loose thread, the hour that slipped, the sentence that will embarrass someone later. Name the affection while you are naming the fix. Otherwise the people you are protecting hear a list and miss the reason you made it.
Water is earth's easy company. It softens what would otherwise go hard, and earth gives the feeling somewhere to stand. Fire can warm a careful life into courage, and it can also rush a joint before it has set. Air arrives as an idea that does not yet have a body. Let the idea stay an idea for one evening. Then ask it to become a date, a tool, or a bill with a name on it.
Two earth signs can make a life nobody else has to rescue. They can also wait so long for the right moment that the moment passes in the yard. One of them has to be willing to move the chair.
Air
Libra · Sep 23 – Oct 22 · Cardinal · Aquarius · Jan 20 – Feb 18 · Fixed · Gemini · May 21 – Jun 20 · Mutable
Air sorts a day by naming it, comparing it, and turning it once more before spending it. The shared temperament is a mind that wants company. Devotion is real here. It refuses a script that allows only one sentence.
Libra is cardinal air, so you open the encounter. You catch the quarrel while it is still only a shift in the air, and your first move is to make the following sentence fair to both people in it. Keep a preference that belonged to you before the room became graceful. Aquarius is fixed. The principle stays put while the fashions move. A custom the group has applauded still has to answer for the person it forgot. Bring the large idea home as one change a neighbor could use before the week is over. Gemini is mutable air. A conversation is a house with more than one room, and you like a guest who will walk into the second one and mean it. What tires you is a script that locks every door but the front.
Fire gives air a pulse. Fire chooses. Air keeps the choice from being only a spark. Together they can actually leave the house. Earth asks whether the clever thing can be lived with, which air sometimes hears as a closed window. Answer the question and the friendship gets useful. Water is the delicate pairing. You want the feeling named. A water sign may have been carrying it since morning, and can feel studied when they wanted to be accompanied. Ask, and then let a silence count.
Two air signs can make an evening out of one interesting problem. Someone still has to choose the table, or the talk becomes a lovely way of staying in the doorway.
Water
Cancer · Jun 21 – Jul 22 · Cardinal · Scorpio · Oct 23 – Nov 21 · Fixed · Pisces · Feb 19 – Mar 20 · Mutable
Water keeps a memory for feeling. You notice the smile that is working too hard, the story that was supposed to be finished years ago, and whether the room can hold a true sentence. That attention is a gift, and it is a weight. Some of it can be set down at the door.
Cancer is cardinal water. You begin by making room. Someone was expected, the hour was kept, and the person at the door can tell they are not a surprise you have to recover from. Affection, for you, is often a place before it is a speech. Scorpio is fixed. Once a feeling is admitted, you do not dabble in it. You want the person without the public edit, and you offer the same concentration back. A vague answer feels like a smile on a shut door. You would rather hear the awkward true thing at dinner than spend a month decoding a pleasant tone. Pisces is mutable water. The edge between your mood and the room's mood is thin, and you are often right about what has not been said. When their words arrive, leave those words in charge, even if your version was richer. Tenderness stays generous when you keep a boundary you chose while you were calm.
Earth lets water be water. It offers a garden, a meal, an ordinary Tuesday, and it does not argue with the tide. Air can help you find the sentence, and it can also arrive with a theory while you are still finding out whose feeling it was. Fire is the bright risk. Its courage can walk you out of a deep chair. Its speed can treat a confidence as a task. The pairing holds when the fire sign keeps what it was told, and you do not make that person guess what the quiet meant.
Two water signs can understand each other with very little said. They can also fill the house. Somebody has to open a window and name one ordinary next thing: the walk, the soup, the morning.
