The three zodiac modalities

A modality is how a sign spends its element. Traditional astrology sorts the twelve signs into three. Cardinal signs start a season. Fixed signs hold the middle of it. Mutable signs adapt as one season turns into the next. Element is the temperament. Modality is the timing. The dates below are the Sun's usual stay, and a name opens today's horoscope.

Dates, elements, and ruling planets for the whole list are on zodiac signs. How the three signs inside one element still differ is on zodiac elements.

Cardinal

Aries · Mar 21 – Apr 19 · Fire · Cancer · Jun 21 – Jul 22 · Water · Libra · Sep 23 – Oct 22 · Air · Capricorn · Dec 22 – Jan 19 · Earth

Cardinal describes starting. These four signs open the seasons, and the traditional picture is initiative: a willingness to go first, with a trail of opened doors when the only work left is maintenance.

Aries is cardinal fire, so you open spring by moving while the plan is still a sketch. The strain shows up when you have already left and the reason is still sitting in the driveway.

Cancer is cardinal water, so you open summer by taking someone in, often with a meal or a kept hour. The same care can arrange a welcome they wanted to choose themselves.

Libra is cardinal air, so you open autumn in the space between people, smoothing a small tilt before it becomes a quarrel. The opening still needs one preference that was yours alone.

Capricorn is cardinal earth, so a beginning arrives as a calendar: a person, a date, and a picture of finished. That structure looks after people, and it still needs a day that is not only the next rung.

Element changes the object of that first move. Cardinal fire opens with heat and a direction. Cardinal water opens a shelter. Cardinal air opens a meeting. Cardinal earth opens a project you can return to next month. When two cardinal people share a room, name whose start it is.

Fixed

Taurus · Apr 20 – May 20 · Earth · Leo · Jul 23 – Aug 22 · Fire · Scorpio · Oct 23 – Nov 21 · Water · Aquarius · Jan 20 – Feb 18 · Air

Fixed describes sustaining. These four signs hold the middle of a season, after the weather has arrived and before it leaves. The traditional picture is steadiness: staying after the first excitement has gone, and sometimes staying past the point where the thing has changed.

Taurus is fixed earth, so you keep the route you already trust and the agreement that still fits next month. The pause is usually a check on whether the new plan can be lived in.

Leo is fixed fire, so the warmth stays with the people who welcomed it, and praise works when it names the particular thing you did. Carry that warmth toward a room that wants it, rather than spending the night proving you were there.

Scorpio is fixed water, so a confidence, once taken, is kept with the same care as a key. A soft non-answer after that feels like being waved past a locked room, and the difficult sentence at dinner is kinder.

Aquarius is fixed air, so the idea stays when the fashion leaves, including a popular custom that forgot someone. It becomes useful on the street when it turns into a single change a neighbor can try this week.

What is held depends on the element. Fixed earth holds a life you can touch. Fixed fire holds warmth and recognition. Fixed water holds a feeling once it has been admitted. Fixed air holds a rule for how people ought to be treated. Two fixed signs can make something that lasts.

Mutable

Gemini · May 21 – Jun 20 · Air · Virgo · Aug 23 – Sep 22 · Earth · Sagittarius · Nov 22 – Dec 21 · Fire · Pisces · Feb 19 – Mar 20 · Water

Mutable describes adapting. These four signs sit where one season is already becoming the next. The traditional picture is flexibility: getting people through a change without pretending the old map still fits, and the strain is revising so often that nothing is allowed to finish.

Gemini is mutable air, so you adapt by letting two subjects stay true at once. The company you want can follow that turn, and a conversation with no side exit is what tires you.

Virgo is mutable earth, so you revise the day in small corrections, a time that slipped or a note that will land badly if you leave it. People hear the affection when you name it in the same breath as the correction.

Sagittarius is mutable fire, so the aim can change without the courage going out, and you like company on the revised road. Staying with a conclusion only because it was announced is what makes the journey feel over.

Pisces is mutable water, so you often notice the turn, and the unspoken sentence, before anyone names it. Once they do name it, their wording should lead, and a limit you set while you were steady keeps the tenderness from taking the whole house.

Element decides what gets revised. Mutable air revises the account. Mutable earth revises the practical detail. Mutable fire revises the aim while the heat stays. Mutable water revises the feeling, including feelings never put into words. Somebody still has to choose the landing: the table, the note, the end of the evening.
