How sign compatibility is read

A Sun sign is one placement. A pair of them is a sketch of temperament and pace. Traditional astrology reads that sketch in two passes. The element is the temperament the two signs share, or have to translate. The modality is whether each sign would rather start, stay, or change. Dates and ruling planets for the whole list are on zodiac signs. The four temperaments are on zodiac elements. The three paces are on zodiac modalities.

Elements

Signs that share Fire, Earth, Air, or Water already recognize the weather. Fire with fire knows the hurry, and both may move before the reason has been said. Earth with earth trusts what can be returned to tomorrow, and both may wait for a chair that already fits. Air with air will stay for the second question, and a choice can wait until the interesting part is over. Water with water often understands a feeling before anyone names it, and the room can fill. The recognition is the traditional ease of the same element. The shared excess is the part worth noticing out loud.

The complementary pairs are Fire with Air, and Earth with Water. Air offers fire another road and a sharper question, and fire gives air a reason to leave the question. Water softens earth, and earth gives the feeling a place to stand: a meal, a Tuesday, a promise that is still there in the morning. These pairs are traditionally read as easier than a cross of temperaments. The work that remains is ordinary. Someone chooses. Someone keeps the day that already has a shape.

The harder pairings are Fire with Earth, Fire with Water, Air with Earth, and Air with Water. Fire wants a feeling to become a move. Water often wants the feeling kept long enough to be true. Earth asks an idea to arrive as a time, a place, or a finished piece. Air may still be turning the idea once more. The traditional reading calls these harder because the first language is not shared. The longer translation goes better when each person can name the part they were protecting.

Modalities

Cardinal, fixed, and mutable describe how a sign spends its element. A cardinal sign opens a season. A fixed sign holds the middle of it. A mutable sign adapts as one season turns into the next. Two signs can share an element and still disagree about whether to begin, stay, or revise.

Two cardinal signs both want the opening move. The pair is lively when they take turns, and crowded when each opens a door the other had already chosen. Two fixed signs can keep a thing after the first excitement has left. They can also hold two different versions of it and treat both as loyalty. Two mutable signs are quick when the plan changes. The strain shows up when the revision never lands, and the table, the note, and the end of the evening stay unchosen.

A mixed modality covers more of the work: one sign starts, one holds, one adjusts. It can also feel like two clocks. The cardinal sign hears a delay. The fixed sign hears a plan that will not sit still. The mutable sign hears a route with no second draft. Element says whether the temperament is shared or has to be translated. Modality says who is trying to start, stay, or revise.

Quick reference

Each sign below is sorted against the other eleven by element. The other signs of the same element, then the signs of the complementary element, are the traditional easier side. The six signs in the remaining two elements are the traditional harder side. The opposite sign sits on the easier side, because it carries the complementary element, and it shares the modality, so the pace is the part to negotiate. A name opens today's horoscope.

Aries shows the sort in one place. Leo and Sagittarius share the fire, with a fixed pace and a mutable pace. Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius are the air signs, the complementary element. Libra also shares the cardinal opening. Cancer and Capricorn bring water and earth at that same cardinal pace. Taurus, Virgo, Scorpio, and Pisces are the remaining earth and water signs, and the first language differs.
